Noojee

Overview

Noojee lies in the forested foothills of the Great Dividing Range, not far from Mount Baw Baw, on the Latrobe River.

There are many features around the Noojee area, including the restored National Trust classified Trestle Bridge, along the Loch Valley Tramway, the spectacular Toorongo and Ampitheatre Falls and also the Ada Tree - one of Victoria’s largest trees.

The Outpost Retreat offers a rustic restaurant with timber relics, toolshed bar and bistro and cabin accommodation overlooking the Latrobe River.

History

In 1919 the railway was built to Noojee. This allowed the sawmillers to operate in the area. As roads were in a very poor state, more than 200 kilometres of tramlines were built to link the mills to the railway station. At least 28 mills were in operation between 1919 and 1926, nearly all on privately owned land, today one operating mill still exists.

In 1926 and 1939, bushfires went through this area. Today, the rail line serves as a walking track and you can still visit the only remaining Trestle Bridge that was not destroyed by fire.
