Golden Beach

Overview
Some of Victoria's best ocean fishing can be enjoyed in Gippsland at Golden Beach. Every year thousands of visitors flock to Ninety Mile Beach to take part in the many fishing competitions that are hosted in the area. The man made reef at Delray Beach also provides a surf fishing paradise. Surrounded by the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park the area is home to a great variety of birdlife.
The wreck of the Trinculo is located 6km south of Golden Beach. The Trinculo was forced ashore by a gale in 1879 and the remaining structure can still be seen on the beach. Throughout the year, tides and sand movement expose the wreck to different degrees, however the rusting hull and its striking vertical iron shafts are always visible and visitors can enjoy the ability to inspect the wreck on the sands of 90 Mile Beach.
History
The iron barque ‘Trinculo’ (1858) met with a heavy gale whilst travelling from Albany W.A to Newcastle NSW in ballast in May 1879. The vessel was struck by S/E force 11 winds off Wilsons Promontory and forced on to a sandbar 15 metres offshore at Stockyard Hill on the 90 Mile Beach on the 30th May 1879. Fortunately no lives were lost as a result of this disaster.
Today the remains of the Trinculo wreck lay imbedded in the sands of the 90 Mile Beach and have become a relic of the past subject to the exposure of the weathering elements of sea and sun. Interpretation panels on site and also at the Golden Beach public hall tells the story of the brave actions of the crew and captain, a crew member Levere being awarded the Royal Humane Society Silver medal for his bravery after swimming to shore with a rescue line.
